Our Sustainability Promise

Bergman’s love for Fårö leads the way

“If you want to be solemn, you could say I had found my home, my real home. If you want to be funny, you could talk about love at first sight.” That’s how Ingmar Bergman described his first encounter with Fårö – back in April 1960, when he came here scouting for filming locations for Through a Glass Darkly. Like Bergman, we want to care for this place, the art, and the people – those who live on the island, those who work with us, and those who visit us and Fårö. Our sustainability efforts are part of the EU-funded project Sustainable Plejs, run by Gotland’s united tourism industry.

What We Do Today

Thinking sustainably isn’t just important to us – it’s a given. We exist to care for a unique cinematic heritage: that of Ingmar Bergman. This responsibility demands more than just good operations – it requires care for both the place we work in and the people who make our work possible.

We work to spread knowledge and culture – this is the very heart of our mission. We do it through exhibitions, the annual Bergman Week, and by supporting new filmmakers in collaboration with SF Studios and the Göteborg Film Festival. Children and youth enjoy free admission to the museum, and our guides share their insights into the power of art, culture, and film. n our creative workshop, children and young people can learn to make animated films and create freely. We are open during school holidays and offer guided tours all year round. Our island and the people who live and work here are important to us, which is why we collaborate as much as we can with other businesses and associations on Fårö and Gotland. We screen brand-new films every Sunday, all year round, and we love our loyal audience who comes here every week.

We strive to make climate-smart choices. During Bergman Week, we use electric cars, our volunteers ride bikes, and we encourage our guests to do the same. We avoid flying when we can – and we buy climate-compensated tickets when we can’t. Thanks to our landlord FUAB, we benefit from solar panels, energy-efficient windows, and charging stations.

When shopping for our café, we prioritize Fårö first, Gotland second, and Sweden third. We cook with what’s available, make use of leftovers, and what little remains goes to the chickens. We use eco-labeled cleaning products, recycle everything we can, and only sell clothing and items that are made to last. Ideally, we want to give visitors experiences – not things.

What We Will Do in 2025

Fårö is a stunning but fragile place – with thin soil, rare species, and a severe water shortage. In 2025, we’ll improve our efforts to inform visitors on how they can help care for the island, such as saving water and sorting waste properly. We’ll do this through the voice of Ingmar Bergman, who loved this island so deeply.

We also want to take even better care of the people within our organization. Many in the cultural sector work hard – sometimes too hard – out of love for what they do, and this is true for us as well. While we already offer good conditions, this year we’re beginning the process of joining a collective agreement for non-profit organizations. We’ll also clarify job descriptions so that everyone working with us knows what’s expected – and can feel both secure and inspired in their role. We aim to be a workplace people seek out – allowing us to grow as both an organization and a cultural institution.

What We Are Planning

Together with the Fårö local heritage association, we plan to create a flower meadow to offer a pleasant and inspiring environment for our visitors while also supporting the island’s wild pollinators. We already save existing flowers when mowing lawns, but we can do more.

We also plan to collaborate with other businesses and organizations on Fårö to apply for funding for a hop-on-hop-off bus project. This would allow visitors to explore Fårö without needing to bring their cars – better for the environment, the wallet, and local businesses.

We want to deepen the local partnerships we already have and continue building new ones – all to make Fårö a sustainable place to live, work, and visit.
