In the first part of Bergman's the God and Man trilogy, a writer of popular fiction charts his daughter's mental illness as the basis for a novel. Through a Glass Darkly takes place on an island during one day in four people's lives. We meet the author David (Gunnar Björnstrand), his neglected children Karin (Harriet Andersson) and Minus (Lars Passgård), as well as Karin's husband Martin (Max von Sydow).

Through a Glass Darkly is the first film Ingmar Bergman recorded on Fårö and his second full collaboration with cinematographer Sven Nykvist. The film won an Oscar for best foreign film in 1962.
