In the future

A permanent exhibition about Ingmar Bergman’s life and his film and theatre work will be produced by the Bergman Center. The exhibition will provide visitors of all ages with cinematic and artistic experiences and is to be constructed in the shape of installations, dioramas and interactive attractions designed to let the visitor partake of and be drawn into the world and works of Bergman.

The exhibitions and activities at Bergman Center will build on the magic, playfulness and childish delight in theatre and the film medium that never left Ingmar Bergman. Dioramas will let the visitor enter recreated rooms and scenes from Bergman’s films. Such as grandma’s magical room from the beginning of Fanny and Alexander, with its heavy velvet curtains, ferociously ticking clocks and its statues, which follow Alexander’s gaze as he lies hidden underneath the oak table.

Extending the main exhibition, maps and visual materials will be available for those who, on their own or as part of a Bergman Center activity, would like to conduct a safari to Bergman’s filming locations on Fårö. You can already discover Bergman’s Fårö – read more under Book Bergman Experience.

Children and youths will also be able to play with optical and digital toys – from zoetropes and magic lanterns to modern, interactive games in the spirit of Bergman.

Besides the main exhibition, the Bergman Center – both separately and in collaboration with other institutions – will annually produce thematic exhibitions in conjunction with current themes for the center’s work. The Center will also host exhibitions in the spirit of Bergman produced elsewhere in the world. The exhibitions will primarily open during or around Bergman Week. Our exhibition work is developed in a collaboration with Riksutställningar / Swedish Travelling Exhibitions, whose premises are now located in Gotland.

  • The Bergman Week programme is released!

The Belgian filmmaking brothers Dardenne have become the modern fixtures of contemporary European cinema. Although their films are scarce in dialogue, their lyrical portrayals of people on the outskirts of society are unmistakably and uniquely dardennesque. It is with great pride and joy we welcome Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne as our guests at this year’s edition of the Bergman Week – indeed their first visit to Sweden. Book your tickets here!

  • Bergman Center receives 3 million SEK

Through 2012 to 2014, The Bergman Center on Fårö arranges Child and Childhood, a project financed by the Swedish Inheritance Fund and Beijerstiftelsen (The Beijer foundation).

The project consists of four building blocks: the Creative Workshop, the Drawing Room (exhibition), Theatre Construction and Learning. The activities are developed in collaboration with children, youths and teachers at Gotland’s pre-schools and schools.
