History

Ingmar Bergman first came to Fårö on a stormy day in April 1960, reluctantly looking for a shooting location for Through a Glass Darkly. The visit made a deep impression. Since then, seven of Bergman’s films have been shot on Fårö. The island is also the place where Bergman lived and worked for long periods of his life. Ingmar Bergman is buried at the cemetary of the Fårö Church.

The Bergman Week was founded in 2004 by a group of local enthusiasts and organisations who created Fårö Filmcenter. When the center dissolved in the fall of 2005, the management was taken over by Fårö Future, Film on Gotland, Göteborg Film Festival, and Gotland University. Today, the Fårö Bergman Center Foundation is the main organizer of the week, and nowadays many of the events are presented in collaboration with The Bergman Estate and the Ingmar Bergman Foundation.

The Bergman Week is a celebration of Ingmar Bergman’s art, with films, guests, seminars, concerts and tours to filming locations on Fårö. Bergman’s abundant work is a constant source of inspiration to filmmakers all around the world and his themes are highly relevant in our century as well! The goal of the Bergman Week is to shed new light on his films and highlight the timeless themes reappearing throughout the body of his work.
