History

As early as the 70s, Ingmar Bergman and his wife Ingrid had an idea about a foundation with the aim of establishing a meeting place for artists on Fårö. The idea was not to come to fruition in this form in his lifetime, but in 2004 the first Bergman Week took place on Fårö.

From its humble beginnings, Bergman Week has in a few years grown to an important, international cultural event. The programme includes lectures, film screenings, conversations with guests from Sweden and abroad and excursions to the many film locations on Fårö. Previous years’ guest lists feature names such as Ang Lee, Kenneth Branagh, Peter Webber, Harriet Andersson, Wim Wenders, Bibi Andersson, Mikael Persbrandt, Andrei Zvyagintsev and István Szábó – not to mention Ingmar Bergman himself.

Shortly after Ingmar Berman’s passing in 2007, the group behind Bergman Week took the initiative for a Bergman Center.

With our experiences from Bergman Week as our foundation, we now aim to develop a Bergman Center on Fårö. Our goal is the creation of an active destination featuring dynamic content revolving around Sweden’s foremost cinematic artist, set in the unique landscape of Fårö.

  • The Bergman Week programme is released!

The Belgian filmmaking brothers Dardenne have become the modern fixtures of contemporary European cinema. Although their films are scarce in dialogue, their lyrical portrayals of people on the outskirts of society are unmistakably and uniquely dardennesque. It is with great pride and joy we welcome Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne as our guests at this year’s edition of the Bergman Week – indeed their first visit to Sweden. Book your tickets here!

  • Bergman Center receives 3 million SEK

Through 2012 to 2014, The Bergman Center on Fårö arranges Child and Childhood, a project financed by the Swedish Inheritance Fund and Beijerstiftelsen (The Beijer foundation).

The project consists of four building blocks: the Creative Workshop, the Drawing Room (exhibition), Theatre Construction and Learning. The activities are developed in collaboration with children, youths and teachers at Gotland’s pre-schools and schools.

  • Record attendance at the summer’s Bergman Week!

Sunday night, the eighth edition of the Bergman Week on Fårö wrapped with a sound installation on the theme of ”The Sounds of Bergman’s landscape” amongst the ”rauks” (huge lime stones) on the island. The arrangers were content with ticket sales having increased 20 percent from the previous year.
